My journey in mental health began as a young girl when I was selected to be part of the peer counseling club in primary school. Since then, building genuine connections and engaging in meaningful conversations with others has become a passion. Early exposure to mental health support was particularly helpful when I struggled with self-esteem and anxiety. I often found myself in a cycle of questioning my abilities and feeling inadequate compared to others. Seeking help gave me the courage to overcome my self-doubt. Therapy showed me the value of self-understanding, which led to personal growth rather than being trapped in a loop of self-criticism.
I had a wonderful experience furthering my understanding of psychology while pursuing a Bachelor of Psychology with Honours at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris. After graduating, I worked with the Federation of Reproductive Health Associations, Malaysia as a Project and Programme Officer. In this role, I advocated for and promoted Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) for all, especially marginalized and underserved communities. Working with refugees and others in underserved communities who lacked access to basic health services further motivated me to make mental health services accessible to everyone.
My journey continued with a Master of Psychology (Clinical) at Universiti Sains Malaysia – Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (USM-UPSI). My clinical training at Hospital Al-Sultan Abdullah and Pusat Pakar Psikologi Jiwadamai provided hands-on experience in administering psychological assessments, conducting therapy, and collaborating within multidisciplinary teams. My primary therapeutic approach is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), incorporating elements of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as needed, tailored to each client's specific requirements.
Currently, I am a Resiliency Coach on The Mind’s special project team. I lead both group and individual coaching sessions to offer mental health support. Patience and empathy are central to my approach, and I prioritize creating a safe and nonjudgmental space for my clients.
Seeking mental health support is not a sign of weakness but rather an act of strength and self-compassion. Just as we care for our physical health, our mental well-being deserves the same level of attention and kindness. My personal experience has shown me that healing begins when we allow ourselves to be seen, heard, and supported. If you are facing self-doubt, anxiety, or life's uncertainties, know that you don't have to go through it alone. Reaching out for help can be the first step towards understanding yourself, embracing growth, and breaking free from self-criticism. There is hope, and there is help available. You are worthy of support, and your well-being matters.
