ROSENBERG SELF-ESTEEM SCALE

If you asked anyone if self- esteem was important, I doubt you’d find very many people who would challenge you. Many of us would champion the need for good self-esteem, as it often relates to better self confidence, Social ability, academic performance and enhanced relationships to name a few. All in all, the more we have of it, the better.

But what is self-esteem and why does it seem so influential in our lives? For something that not many of us can identify, it’s curious how much of an impact it can have.

In its simplest form, self-esteem is the perception of belief that we have of ourselves, be it good or bad. And from this definition, a few things are clear. That self-esteem is based on how you perceive yourself. That there’s no such thing as good or bad self-esteem (more on this later), just positive or negative. And finally, that because it’s based on your perception, it’s something that can and will change in different periods of your life.

I mentioned just now that there’s no good or bad self esteem, because as vital a contributor it can be to the lives that lead, what we choose to do about our self-esteem matters a great deal as well. So for example, if at this point in time you’ve got poor self-esteem, and you choose to improve it by doing things to improve yourself, like working out, dressing better or other things like that. Alternatively, if you have super high self-esteem, that can also mean that you’ll rest on your laurels and over time, it may diminish as well.

Curious to find out more, give this self-esteem screener a go! And just remember there is no such thing as good or bad self-esteem. Just whether or not your perception of your self is high or low. Regardless of which way it is, know that you can do things to change it, and you can choose how you want to be.
