When I was younger, I was a keen observer of people. And as I observed, I wondered why there were so many differences between them and me, especially when comparing myself with my siblings. Being an “obedient” child, I sometimes found it hard to understand why my siblings would act out, and how they were so different from myself. This led to a natural fascination with the psychology of a person, and that is the path that I took as I pursued my undergraduate studies. I started to appreciate the multiple layers within behavior and certainly more than just what I see being acted out.
Upon graduating with a BSc in Child Psychology, I worked in an autism centre and I started to find that autism does not only affect the children themselves, but the parents and families. I noticed that all they needed at times, was a listening ear, that was empathetic, and free of judgement. This experience allowed me to view the importance of emotional support from a holistic perspective, which inspired me to broaden my ability to offer this support to a wider range of individuals. Thus, I went on to pursue Masters in Clinical Aspects of Psychology from University of Reading (UK). However, I was not qualified to practice in Malaysia and this led me to pursue a Master of Professional Counselling at Monash University Malaysia where I equipped myself with the skills and qualification that I need to support those in need, big or small.
During my training, I conducted workshop and provided individual and group therapy in various settings, such as homeless shelter, prison, NGO and private centre. I had the opportunity to work with children, adolescents, and adults who experienced concerns such as behavioural problems, stress, low self-confidence, relationship issues, depression and anxiety. Currently, I am a licensed counsellor and in my practice with clients, my main theoretical orientation is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). I personally believe that by learning to reframe the way we think or the way we act can bring positive change to the way we feel because thought, emotion and behavior are all connected. I do integrate other modalities as well to cater to my client’s concerns because every individual has different styles and needs.
Working with clients have helped me realize that changes or shifts that we experience can come in a myriad of forms. And sometimes, even the smallest of change can make waves of difference in our lives. Allow me to journey with you through this intimidating yet fulfilling time, and I will strive to help you feel heard, validated, and supported. Together, we can help you make waves.
