In this age where technology has provided a lifeline for many companies in various industries, there are still many companies where human capital and the corporate workforce represent an integral part of the company. In addition to managing the expectations of stakeholders, employers are responsible for creating a conducive working environment for their employees.

Since human capital is an integral part of an institution, a common concern among employers would be a crisis involving their workforce as it would affect productivity. Throughout their employment, employees would have to deal with a multitude of difficulties, be it work-related or personal difficulties. Whilst employers typically have medical benefits given to the employees for physical and medical ailments, not all of the employees’ problems are medically-related.

Common problems faced by employees in a workplace environment would include but not limited to the following:

  • Low morale
  • High absenteeism
  • High medical/sick leave claims
  • Accidents and injuries in the workplace
  • High staff turnover
  • Communication breakdown
  • Family-related concerns
  • Burnout
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Work-related difficulties

Employees are usually a resilient group of individuals, each with their own ways of dealing with the variety of difficulties that come their way throughout the course of their careers. The problem lies not with the employees’ handling of these challenges and the pressures that come along with them, but rather about the times when even their best efforts are not sufficient to overcome those challenges. Normally, these are situational events that could not be predicted or estimated prior. What happens to them then?

Whilst insurance coverage is the most common human resource benefit provided by companies to cover physical and medical ailments, other programs such as the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) are available to assist the employees with the other aspects of life which include mental and emotional difficulties as well as workplace-related issues.

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is an intervention program designed to assist companies in addressing employee behavioural problems and psychological wellbeing. The program serves as a proactive and preventive initiative by employers to help their employees to address the problems that potentially might have a serious impact on their work performance.

EAP @ The Mind encompasses the following services:

  • Therapy and counselling
  • Support groups
  • Emergency hotline
  • Workshops and training

We work with our corporate clients on a variety of different difficulties which encompass but not limited to the following:

1. Individual therapy

  • Work-related difficulties such as communication, stress, anger management, low motivation, burnout, etc.
  • Personal difficulties such as grief and loss, trauma, relationship issues, emotional distress, changes in life, addiction, etc.
  • Clinical difficulties such as anxiety, depression, etc.

2. Couples therapy

3. Child therapy

Support groups involve the gathering of a group of 5 to 7 employees with similar difficulties and having open discussions moderated by a facilitator. This model works based on the fact that different individuals facing similar problems would have more motivation and drive to work on their own problems in a group, especially when its members show determination and improvement as time goes by. The following support groups are available in our EAP service.

  • Sleep Management Support Group
  • Smoking Cessation Support Group
  • Weight Loss Support Group

The emergency hotline is available 24 hours a day and is manned by a personnel trained in Psychological First Aid (PFA) who will provide assistance to corporate clients in times of need. Emergencies could happen at any instance and having somebody to contact at all times, especially after office hours, would definitely be beneficial for employees.

Our team of corporate trainers and mental health professionals also conduct talks and workshops on a variety of topics pertinent to corporate and workplace issues. The services provided could be lunchtime/teatime talks, or even half to full day workshops on topics of your choice. Each talk or workshop is tailor-made to suit your needs and corporate culture, so rest assured, each assignment is not derived from a set template.

The following are a list of commonly requested talks by our corporate clients:

  • Work-life integration
  • General wellness
  • Stress management
  • Time management
  • Positive family relationships
  • Communication skills

Moving forward in the 21st century, companies have employee benefit or wellness programs that are designed solely to cater to the needs of their employees. The company’s human resource is responsible for the welfare of it’s employees and EAPs can also be included as a part of those programs, to provide a holistic support package to the company’s employees.

Even though the human resource department is openly available to any employee in need, typically the response rates are low, even when the employees are facing great difficulties at work. Employees are very rarely comfortable enough to divulge their problems to their colleagues in the human resource department for the fear of being singled out or discriminated against in the future. This is where EAP can come in to assist those employees.

The greatest benefit of EAP is the fact that employees are able to anonymously seek help for the difficulties that they are going through, with confidentiality privileges. The employees would be more comfortable speaking with a third-party provider and work on their issues without ever worrying about their jobs being on the line.
On a company level, the human resource department will receive utilization reports with a breakdown on the types of cases worked on so that the company is aware and could make the necessary changes to ensure optimal productivity.

EAP can be used to complement any company’s initiatives to provide a holistic wellness and benefits package for their employees. With a successful EAP program, any company would be able to see improvements in these various sectors:

  • Talent retention
  • Enhance employee productivity
  • Risk management
  • Building workplace resilience
  • Enhance work-life integration
  • Workplace communication and teamwork
  • Stress management
  • Avenue to address disciplinary issues
  • Reduced absenteeism and medical claims

By providing improved and much needed benefits such as the EAP service to employees, it would not only improve workplace morale and productivity, it would make your company an employer of choice. This would go a long way to create employees that are happy and content, who would be willing to go the distance for the company and it’s stakeholders.
